Keeping illnesses like the common cold and the flu at bay are a top concern during flu season, but preventing disease when SHTF is even more important. There are many reasons to keep a stock of essential oils in your arsenal of supplies for when disaster strikes. With an array of medicinal properties, essential oils can serve many purposes — including disease prevention.
Aromatherapy is the most widely recognized use for essential oils, but they can do far more than just boost your mood or help you sleep at night. The antimicrobial properties of essential oils are so impressive that they may even replace “conventional” antibiotics one day. Essential oils have a lot to offer, especially as a tool in your preparedness kit.
Writing for Strategic Living, Gail Levy shares a potent essential oil bomb that will kick your cold and flu symptoms to the curb.
The ingredients for this miracle solution are simple. Just combine the following ingredients in your favorite essential oil bottle:
Levy recommends using this cold and flu blend in a few different ways. It can be used as a rollerball solution, applied to the chest, throat and bottoms of the feet to help relieve congestion. She suggests mixing 60 drops with a carrier oil at a 30 percent dilution for this purpose, and cautions that this mixture is quite potent. Levy explains that when fighting illness, using a stronger solution can be helpful. She suggests applying the solution three times a day, but that it can be used up to six times a day if you’re feeling really lousy.
Adding six to eight drops of the cold and flu blend to a diffuser is another great option.
As Levy notes, there are many favorite essential oil protective blends on the market today, such as Thieves or Robbers blends.
Additionally, Levy offers her own recipe for an EO blend, which consists of the following:
The protective blend can also be used in a diffuser, in soaps, and in salves.
While essential oils are generally regarded as safe, it is important to exercise a level of caution with essential oils when treating infants or children. Always speak with your naturopath or other preferred care provider before beginning a new health regimen for your child, especially if they aren’t feeling well.
As Healthline reports, alternative health organizations often suggest a substantially lower amount of essential oils for children than adults.
Essential oils have a wide array of uses, ranging from medicinal to more industrial. In addition to using essential oils to keep illness at bay, these concentrates can also be used as natural cleaners and disinfectants. The versatility of essential oils is part of what makes them such a valuable component of any prepper’s pantry.
Recently published research has found that the antimicrobial effects of essential oils are so potent that they are even effective against drug-resistant bacteria. With the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs now threatening global health, essential oils are showing themselves to be a great alternative.
And when you’re bugging out, essential oils can offer a bevy of other benefits: They can help you sleep better, and keep the bugs away.
